S&T Austria replaces KABEG server landscape

Biggest HP C blade virtualisation project in Austria: 59 servers - virtualisation, upgrade and maintenance

April 24th 2007, Austria: S&T Austria is carrying out Austria’s largest installation of HP C blade servers to date, for Kärnten-based KABEG. A total of 59 servers will be replaced, virtualised with VM-ware and migrated to strategic Microsoft platforms. S&T is taking over hardware servicing for the next five years and will undertake regular reviews of the Microsoft platforms. The project, begun in December 2006, has a total contract value of 450,000 Euros.
Based in the state of Kärnten, KABEG manages regional hospitals and, with around 6,300 employees, is Kärnten’s biggest employer. KABEG is responsible for the administration, control and dynamic development of Klagenfurt, Villach, Wolfsberg, Laas regional hospitals and the Gailtal Clinic. Far from just introducing modern and more efficient methods in medicine and healthcare, KABEG is also concerned with IT professionalism and use of the latest technology. “Five years ago S&T helped us install all our current servers. Now we are transferring everything to the new C-class system, which we will run for the next few years and which will also take up less space, reducing our air-conditioning and power costs,” explains Josef Walgram, IT Infrastructure Manager for KABEG.

Installation, configuration, upgrade, maintenance
59 servers (57 in Klagenfurt, two in Wolfsberg) will be installed by S&T Austria in the first phase, which is already under way. Then comes roll-out of the VM-ware using HP’s Rapid Deployment tool, migrating and consolidating strategic platforms such as Exchange, SQL, Citrix, File and Print Services, SMS etc to the new hardware. The new System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (formerly SMS v4) will be installed for PC deployment and the installation roadmap. This will form the strategic platform for all devices, for rolling out software and/or patches in a structured manner and for maintaining current status. The innovative project will be completed at the end of June 2007. For the next five years S&T Austria will take over hardware maintenance and maintenance of the Microsoft platforms.

“We are delighted to be able to plan and execute the largest HP C-class blade server project ever carried out in Austria for KABEG. This is one of the biggest C-class blade server projects yet in Austria. More and more businesses are switching to this system to cut costs and improve flexibility. We can offer specially trained staff, years of experience in complex IT infrastructures and the necessary migration skills of one of Austria’s biggest IT services providers with an international background,” explains Georg Komornyik, CEO of S&T Austria.
